There’s something to be said for someone who is so in love with his or her job that he doesn’t realize what a crappy job he’s doing.  And, no, I’m not talking about the kid at the local Burger Hut who forgets to ‘hold the pickle’ every single time I hit the drive thru.  No matter how loud I yell or how much I curse into that speaker, he always leaves the pickle on there…but I digress.  Ed Wood was a director who brought us such movies as Violent Years, Jail Bait, The Bride and The Beast and, the Citizen Kane of bad movies, Plan 9 From Outer Space.

And therein lies the beauty and humor of ‘b’ movies to me.  I find something intrinsically humorous about the idea of someone ‘pitching’ Child’s Play to a studio.  I imagine that it goes a little something like this.

Filmmaker, “I’ve got this great idea for a movie.  It’s about a doll who’s

Possessed by a serial killer who’s trying to find a new body

                     For himself.”

Studio Boss, “That’s BRILLIANT!  This movie has Oscar written all over it!

How much money do you need?  And how soon can you get

                       Started?!?!”

This is the kind of scene I imagine everytime I watch a ‘b’ movie.  And this is also what Ed Wood is about.  Ed has such a passion for the movies he makes that everyone is infected, he even manages to convince an entire cast and crew to be baptized to get financing for a movie…you gotta love that!  Plus, you’ve got Bill Murray as the incredibly gay Bunny Breckinridge, George ‘The Animal’ Steele as Tor Johnson (you know you’ve got a winner when you’ve got one wrestler playing another wrestler) and you can’t forget the Oscar winning performance of Martin Landau as Boris Karloff.  This is another Tim Burton winner!  If you haven’t already, check it out, and remember, the best movies are bad movies!!
