Alright, so usually I talk about 'B' movies, but who says just because it's a low budget it has to be bad? I saw a movie at the theatre and it's out on DVD now, so I thought I'd take a minute to warn you! Now, I know, it's funnier to let people rent these things and then listen to the wails of pain as they endure an adventure in cinematic torture for themselves. But sometimes, these movies are sooooo painful that I just can't stand to think of others watching them. What movie could I be talking about? Well, it's not a low budget horror movie, or one of those Merchant Ivory atrocities. This time, it's a big budget two letter Speilberg movie. No, not ET, bashing ET is almost un-American. I'm talking about AI!
Now, I know by looking at the trailer and at the poster, you'd think, hey, this looks pretty good. That's the Speilberg trap! Don't fall for it. First of all this is the story of a small 'toy' who wants to be a real boy. He searches the blue fairy who he's sure will turn him into a real boy. Sound familiar? Well, it should, you probably liked it as a kid when it was Disney's Pinocchio! But this time Pinocchio is traveling with a talking teddy bear and a male robot programmed to be a gigolo, Disney was never like this!
So, once you've sat through the first hour or so of this seventy two hour movie (it's not actually that long, it just feels like it), you've got your mind set on the Pinocchio story, the little robot becomes a real boy and everyone's happy...well, FORGET THAT!! This is a movie so sad and depressing that a guy in the aisle ahead of me actually hanged himself! I've never seen a movie this depressing, and I've sat through several Cher movies!!!
On paper, this is a great idea for a movie, but, like they say, it's all in the execution. Once you realize it's a re-telling of the Pinocchio story, you think you know, pretty much, what to expect. And to very from that theme a little, wouldn't hurt too much. It's the whole killing the boys family and leaving him stranded in the woods and that's a couple of the happier moments in this horrible movie!! Do yourself a favor, just rent the Disney version of Pinocchio. It's older, but it won't make you want to hurt yourself when it's over and while your sitting through it, your ass won't fall asleep. It's a 'win-win' situation!
And until the next time, remember keep your eyes peeled for a new look to the site and let me know if there's something that you like and don't want to see changed. And, remember that the best movies are bad movies!
