Reminding you that The Best Movies Are Bad Movies

When you look up the word 'macabre', you'll see that it means 'suggesting the horror of death and decay'.  And when it comes to macabre movies, no one suggests the horror of death better than the Italians, especially in the 70s!  And when I say 'suggest' that's exactly what I mean, you can always tell if a movie is macabre because there's not actual blood and gore, only the suggestion of them.  The movie this time does exactly that, suggest the horror of death without actually showing said horror, it's called The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave and it's one of the most bizarre and macabre movies I've seen in quite a while.

The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave is the story of Lord Alan Cunningham, now Lord Alan isn't your normal guy, Lord Alan has been a little disturbed since the death of his wife...you guessed it...Evelyn.  And Lord Alan's peculiar distubance leads him to hire hookers, take them back to his castle and torture them.  Now, according to Lord Alan's therapist all he needs is a good woman, which seemed strange to me because if he's will to torture random women, what the hell would he do to a woman he was comfortable with?  But, as usual, I'm wrong, because Lord Alan finds a good woman and marries her and all seems to be going fine until...yes, you guessed it again, Evelyn seems to come out of her grave.

The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave isn't the horror movie that you might think it is, instead, it suggests a lot of horror and mayhem without showing anything and it's really a mystery dressed up in horror movie clothing.  Now, that's not to say that it's a bad movie, it's just not what you might think.  While there's your standard nude scenes, and zombie suggestions but no actual horror.  What begins as Lord Alan's insanity, turns into what we think might be a ghost story, and then morphs into a who-dun-it!  Not that that's bad, but I really was wanting to see Evelyn come out of the grave and she really never materialized.

The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave is, however, classic 70s Italian horror, a bit hammer with some extra sex mixed into the script.  It's not what you might think from the cover of the DVD, but then, we're not supposed to judge a DVD by it's cover are we?  Or is that just books, I can never remember.  So, until next time remember, never torture a hooker in your castle because the hooker you save may be your own...and the best movies are bad movies!
