Presents
Postal
When I was at the It Came From Lake Michigan Film Festival, I had the chance to check out one of the new Uwe Boll movies...this one NOT based on a video game, and guess what? I Loved It!! It's called Postal and it's probably the world's first terrorism comedy.
The
movie opens with the attack on the World Trade Center, and, while you wouldn't
imaging that you could laugh in any way at that tragedy, it's very funny and
sets the tone for the rest of the movie. (A note here to potential
critics, I was in New York on September 11, 2001, so if you think that I'm a bit
removed from the horror, then you're wrong, I walked the streets during and
after the attack, and actually witnesses one of the towers falling. So, I
feel that I was directly affected by the events of that fateful day, and still
found this a fine movie that's intended to make us all laugh, not shock us.)
There, with that said, let's get on with it.
After the initial open, the story revolves around a man living in a small town called Paradise, which is anything but! He can't get ahead not matter how hard he tries, his wife has let herself go and is cheating on him, he can't find a job and has no money. In a moment of weakness, he turns to his uncle (played by Dave Foley) who is the leader of a cult, the two of them hatch a plan to steal some imported toys, sell them on the internet and get rich! Well, the plan puts them on a collision course with Osama Bin Ladin and his band of terrorists, who happen to be hiding in this country. The two factions battle over who will get to end the world with bird flu!
Postal is a
comedy that takes no prisoners, poking fun at the war on terror, religion and
nearly everything else on the planet! Vern Troyer even makes an appearance
as himself and has a great scene with Dave Foley that's not to be forgotten.
If you're easily offended then Postal probably isn't for you, but if you have a
good sense of humor and feel the need for a good laugh, then you're going to
love this one. Scheduled for release in February of 2008, this is one to
put on your list and get in line for. And, did I mention that Larry Thomas
plays Osama Bin Ladin? And, for those of you who don't know, Mr. Thomas is
probably best known as the 'Soup Nazi' from Seinfeld. I had the chance to
talk with Mr. Thomas at ICFLM and he had some concerns with playing Bin Ladin
for laughs, but the script was so funny, he had to do it. I'm giving
Postal four out of four cigars,
because it really
deserves it! It's something you don't see much of anymore, an irreverent
comedy that's actually funny and not that offensive at all. You really
need to check this one out. So, until next time, when I'll be offending
you one more time, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
