Perfect Creature

If you judge a DVD by it's cover, then you would probably rent Perfect Creature with the idea that you were going to see a vampire movie.  Well, if that's what you're after, then you're about to be sadly disappointed!  Perfect Creature is an excellent movie from New Zealand that I would put in the same category as the Russian movie, Night Watch.

The story here is pretty cool.  In an alternate universe, genetic experiments in the past created a superior race known as The Brotherhood.  The Brotherhood runs the church, they are not unlike priests, they serve the human race and look out for their best interests.  When one of the The Brothers goes rogue, at first it seems very much like a murder mystery, the police and one of the higher ranked Brothers set a trap, hunt and capture Brother Silas, a Brother who has abandoned his role in society and has begun to hunt and kill humans.  When he's captured, it seems like the story might be over, but it only leads us to a larger world of the Brothers.

It seems that The Brotherhood is dying off, since there are no female Brothers and a new Brother hasn't been born in years, Brother Silas was involved in some genetic engineering of his own in an attempt to create new Brothers.  But his attempt only drives humans insane and eventually kills them...oh, and it's contagious!  So, after Silas escapes and begins infecting the city, it's up to the Brotherhood to find him, stop the infection and save the human population from the infection that they created!

Part horror movie, part religious mystery and part good old fashioned murder mystery, Perfect Creature is an entry into a cool new fantasy world.  Everything in this world is recognizable but different, there are TVs and radios and guns and it's all familiar, yet something is slightly off about it, creating the sense that this isn't our world.  I'm giving Perfect Creature three and a half out of four cigars, because, while it'a great movie, it takes a little while to get rolling.  But, once you're sucked in, you're in for the rest of the movie!  Perfect Creature is the first of what I hope will be other movies like this, it's a great start of what could be a very cool mythology!  So, until next time, when I'll reveal that my world is also slight off from the rest of the world...but that's really because I'm a little off myself, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
