Top 10 Horror Movies That You Have To See If You Want To Call Yourself A Horror Fan...According To Me!

Number 11 - Friday The 13th (1980)

This isn't the first slasher movie, but it's the one that made gutting teenagers fun again!  The original tale of camp counselors who head into the woods, only to run across a killer who begins picking them off one by one, is really the one that started it all!  If you've only seen the remake...that's fine...but this is the grand-daddy and you need to check it out too!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 10 - A Nightmare On Elm Street

This is a movie that I wasn't originally going to see, but, after a friend of mine told me that it "made the hair on my ass stand up", I was in line the next morning!  And, I wasn't disappointed.  Before Freddy turned into a quip spewing gag machine came this first movie, that will literally make you afraid to fall asleep.  Scary, intense and amazingly cool, this is a must see movie!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 9 - Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer

Another movie I wasn't too interested in, until I found out it was given an 'X' rating for "moral tone".  Any time the morality police become involved, I can't help myself, I had a ticket the next day.  And, I was surprised, after about half an hour, you begin to feel that you haven't rented a horror movie, but a 'how-to' movie!  Henry takes us on a series of lessons on how to pick victims, weapons selection and how to get rid of a body.  And, it's all so believable that you'll want to stop the movie, but don't this movie has an ending that will not only make you want more, but will make you keep an eye on every person you see in public!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 8 - The Evil Dead

Sam Raimi's first movie, The Evil Dead reinvigorated horror in the 80s.  The tale of a group of friends who travel to a cabin in the woods for a nice weekend.  But, when they discover some tapes made by the occultist who previously owned the cabin, then make the mistake of playing them, they awaken something evil in the woods...something that wants their souls!  While the effects aren't that special, the story more than makes up for it, filled with scares and laughs, The Evil Dead is a movie that you have to see if you want to call yourself a horror fan!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 7 - Re-Animator

Herbert West is just a guy who wants to help humanity, but when his experimental elixir turns out to bring the dead back to life, things quickly get out of hand for Mr. West and his associates!  Re-Animator is an over-the-top gore fest that will have you cringing one minute and laughing the next, in fact, this may be the greatest gore movie ever made!  Rent it and then strap yourself in!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 6 - An American Werewolf In London

When I saw this one, I had never heard about it at all, and, based on the first few minutes of the movie, was sure that I was in for a terrific comedy...then the werewolf attacked and I had to excuse myself to clean my pants!!!  John Landis' masterpiece of horror/comedy still stands up after all these years, and, today, no one remembers that David Naughton was the 'Dr. Pepper Guy', so you might actually enjoy it a bit more.  If you've never seen this...get up, go out and rent it right now!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 5 - I Spit On Your Grave

Spoken of at the 'first feminist horror film', I Spit On Your Grave is just as disturbing today as it was in 1978.  The story of a female writer who rents a secluded cabin to do a bit of work, only to find herself attacked and raped by locals...TWICE...is incredibly hard to watch.  But stick with it, the horrors that she's put through make the revenge at the end so much sweeter!  But, one caveat...don't watch this with your girlfriend or wife!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 4 - Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

If you saw the 2004 remake, then you're familiar with the running zombie controversy.  Well, if you want to settle it in your own mind, then rent the original Romero version of Dawn Of The Dead.  The story is similar to the remake, a group of survivors find themselves holed up in a mall to get away from the oncoming zombie tide.  While the pacing is a bit slow at times, when the zombies march...things get fast paced quickly!  And, unlike the remake, Romero's movie is really a political statement in disguise...so you get your gore and you can feel like you're watching a movie for the symbolism!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 3 - Halloween (1978)

The movie that set the standard for masked slasher movies, John Carpenter's Halloween is the movie that put the genre on the map with the mainstream.  While it wasn't the first ever horror movie, it was the first one to use a holiday theme and to use the idea of stalking teenagers one by one.  Add in Jamie Lee Curtis as the lead babysitter and Donald Pleasance as Dr. Loomis and you've got yourself a movie that's more than just a cool slasher movie!  And let's not forget that amazing theme music, a score that defines horror!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 2 - The Silence Of The Lambs

The ultimate 'serial killer' movie, this one not only scared the crap out of America, but made horror legitimate (for a while) by winning a few Oscars!  The story of the FBI using a captured serial killer to chase and catch a serial killer on the loose, Silence owes a huge debt to Texas Chainsaw.  This is a movie that had me keeping a close eye on all the neighbors for weeks afterward!  If it doesn't make your skin crawl, there's probably something wrong with you!

Four Out Of Four Cigars!

Number 1 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

The movie that started it all...sort of.  Five kids head to a farm in rural Texas, only to discover that the nearest neighbors are displaced slaughterhouse workers who have gone cannibal...and they're hungry!  A movie decried far and wide as 'immoral' and 'degenerate', largely by people who've never seen it, Texas Chainsaw is the movie that set the standard...and left that bar very, very high!  While the original is fairly bloodless, it's still one of the most disturbing movies ever made.  If you've never taken the time to watch the original, then you should treat yourself, it's an amazing movie and holds up well after all these years!
