Hatchet

When a movie proudly proclaims itself to be "not a remake, not a sequel and not an Americanized Japanese movie", then they have my attention.  And, I have to admit, Hatchet may be the best good old fashioned horror movie I've seen in years!

Hatchet is the story of a couple of friends who are on Spring Break at Mardi Gras.  One of the guys is a bit depressed because he just broke up with a long time girlfriend and talks  his buddy into going on a 'swamp ghost tour'.  When they get out on the water it turns out that the swamp they're in is the home of Victor Crowley, a deformed man who, after being accidentally hit in the face with a hatchet, now roams the swamp killing anyone who dares to enter his territory!

On the surface, Hatchet is just another throw-back to 80s slasher movies, but it's more than just that!  Hatchet brings us back to the 'good old days' of monster movies.  Victor Crowley isn't just a deformed guy who kills people, he's a full fledged unstoppable monster.  This is just as advertised, a good old fashioned American horror movie, Hatchet offers everything you'd want, a great story, a cool monster, some very gory (and cool) set pieces and an ending that will really leave you with a jump...and wanting more.  I'm giving Hatchet four out of four cigars, because it's nearly a perfect horror movie, I say nearly, but I can't really point to anything specific that keeps it from perfection...so maybe it is perfect!  So, until next time, when I'll be checking under my bed for monsters, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
