Frontier(s)

Do you like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?  Do you like Nazis?  What about French Films?  Well, if you answered yes to those questions, then I have a movie that you're going to love!  It's Frontier(s), the latest movie from After Dark Films.  Originally intended to be part of the 8 Films To Die For, Frontier(s) was too violent for release, so instead of making cuts that would have gutted the movie (in order to garner the R rating that was required for the festival), After Dark is releasing Frontier(s) directly to DVD in an unrated form.

Set during the riots that took place in Paris in 2005, Frontier(s) is the story of four guys and a girl who have robbed a bank in the midst of the rioting.  On the run, they head for Holland, with one stop on the border of France.  The group splits up and the first two men to hit the border of France (known as the Frontier), find a little hotel to stop and wait for the other two.  The hotel is run by two pretty cute girls, and soon the two guys find themselves being sent to their rooms for a little pre-dinner fun!  Well, afterward, at dinner (a dinner by the way that both men find disgusting!), one of the guys calls the girls whores.  Well, needless to say, that's not a very smart thing.  The next thing you know, both men are beaten and then forced off a cliff into an abandoned mine shaft.  When the others arrive, looking for their friends, they're taken to another 'hostel' that turns out to be a pig farm place on top of a mine.  Now these two find themselves at the merciless hands of these Nazi torturers!  You're gonna see a ton of gruesome stuff here, I'd list it, but why ruin the surprise and the suspense?  You should find these things out for yourself.

Frontier(s) begins as a sort of crime drama, then spins into a sort of chainsaw mode, takes a wild left into Hostel territory and winds up with an ending that's as weird as the rest of the movie!  Frontier(s) is one of the darkest, harshest movies that I've seen in quite sometime, if you enjoyed the Chainsaw movies, then you'll enjoy this, Frontier(s) owes a huge debt to Chainsaw.  If you enjoyed Hostel, then you'll like Frontier(s), it's got all the graphic torture of Hostel, with the added benefit of characters that are actually well developed and you can relate to.  Bottom line is that Frontier(s) rates a four out of four cigar rating, because it's got all the qualities of those 'torture porn' movies that have been so popular, while adding some character, a great story and horror beyond horror!!  Plus, it's French with English subtitles, so you can always tell your friends that you're going to see a French film...just to make yourself sound smarter than you are!  So, until next time, when I'll be wondering what's the best way to cook up the human meat, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
