So, it's been a while since I've updated the page...I've been a little busy watching crappy movies.  They Don't Watch Themselves, People!!!!!  So, I was wandering through the video store and I noticed that Cabin Fever was out.  I'd heard that it was a pretty good movie, so I thought, I like good movies sometimes, I'll take a look at this.

This starts are your typical kids in the woods, out in the middle of nowhere, weirdo hillbillies wandering around, Deliverance/horror kind of thing.  So I had pretty high hopes, but it just sort of sputtered out and didn't do anywhere.  First of all, aren't we all a little tired of the kids in trouble movies, didn't they get a little tired in the 80s??  Plus, these kids are really a bunch of assholes!  I mean, you've got the couple that only wants to be "alone" if you know what I mean...and I think that you do!  Then, you've got the real cute couple, who I had hopes for, but that didn't really go anywhere.  And then the one lone guys, yes, every horror movie has one!  And this guy is the biggest ass-clown of the bunch!

This movie is alot like the other 'hillbillys go wild' movie of the summer 'Wrong Turn', but this one doesn't have any inbred monsters.  It begin with a lot of promise as the kids travel to a secluded cabin for their spring break.  Just as an aside, do you know any kids who look for a secluded cabin for spring break?  I thought they all went to Fort Lauderdale or some damn place.  And even if such kids existed, wouldn't they turn around and go somewhere else when they saw, what is always, the delapidated cabin that one of their lot had paid their hard earned money for.  And for that matter, if you gave money to a friend with the promise of a great spring break and got a crappy run down cabin with no running water, no cable and no air conditioning, wouldn't you be too busy being in jail for beating the crap out of him for wasting your money to go on spring break??  Well, now that that's out of my system.  The horror here is some unexplained and undefined 'virus' that eats away at your flesh.  When one kid gets it, from some undefined source, the others worry that they'll get it too.  As the isolation and paranoia mount, I had great hopes for the kid from 'Boy Meets World', after all, he had all those years of good values taught, week after week, by that dorky Corey kid.  But, it really didn't take apparently, because he becomes as big a jack-ass as the rest of these kids.

Most horror movies depend on you liking the characters, so that when they start to die, you'll feel bad, because you like these people.  Well, in Cabin Fever, by the end of the first half hour, I not only didn't like these people, I was rooting for them to die!!!  It's got all the elements to be a really cool, Deliverance-type, rural horror movie.  You've got the weird locals, the semi-mongaloid kid and the obnoxious city slickers in town.  But, these elements are never really exploited.  People show up and just disappear without any real explanation of what happened to them, although we assume the worst.  Then, when the towns people rise up, it's with very little fanfare and nothing really comes of it.

By the end of Cabin Fever, I was not only ready for these kids to be dead, I wanted to make sure that none survived so that we wouldn't be subjected to the horror that could only be called Cabin Fever 2 : Hillbilly Virus Gone Wild!  So until the next time, when we either get infected by the hillbilly asshole virus, or just go to the beach, remember the best movies are bad movies.
