Versus The

Army Of Darkness

You know, there's something that I just don't do enough and that's share my love of great old movies with the younger generation.  Now, that's mostly because I feel that teenagers are like snakes, it's best if you just ignore them and walk slowly away, but this weekend I got to share one of my favorite movies with my nephew.  Now, he's not a teenager...yet...but I think he liked the movie as much as I did when I first saw it in theatres back in the 90s!  That movie?  Army Of Darkness!

If you haven't seen this movie, then you have no excuses...shut down your computer, run down to the video store and rent it....NOW!  But, just in case, here's the basic story: After the events of Evil Dead 1 and 2 (which are pretty much the same movie), Ash finds himself back in the year 1300, where a group of medieval people are under siege by an evil force and the only way to defeat them is to find the Necronomicon.  Well, it just so happens that it's this same Necronomicon that has the power to send Ash back to his own time, so it's up to Ash to get the Necronomicon.  The problem comes when Ash forgets the words that he needs to render the book safe to take with him!  Now, the dead rise from their graves to form an army to get the book back forming the....you guessed it....Army Of Darkness!

The beauty of Army Of Darkness is that it's the third part of a trilogy, but you really don't need to see the other two movies to enjoy it.  Plus, it's a great way to see that Sam Raimi was a genius director long before he started with that web-headed wall-crawler...what-his-name.  Army Of Darkness still stands the test of time, and, while my nephew did point out to me that 'this must be an old movie, these special effects aren't very good', it's still a movie that's just a ton of fun!  Plus, it tells me that audiences are way more sophisticated than most Hollywood types give them credit for, after all, a 10 year old pointed out the movies one big short-coming and then stated that it didn't ruin the movie at all...smart kid, must be related to the ol' Bad Movie Guy, eh??  Anyway, Army Of Darkness gets a perfect four out of four cigars, because it's a classic that's not going away any time soon, and it just gets better with each viewing.  So, until next time, when I'll be explaining to my brother and sister-in-law that I feel that the kids are mature enough for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, remember that the best movies are bad movies!
