Ms .45
You know, when we use the term 'chick flick', it means a movie that appeals mostly to girly girls, but, when is a chick flick not a chick flick at all? When it's a movie that empowers women. And, when I say empower, I don't mean all that 'validate your feelings' happy horse-shit! I mean, women who are equal to men and deal with issues in a manner that men do...a sort of 'do unto others' philosophy. Well, there are a few of those kinds of movies out there, and I just ran across another one, Ms .45.
Here's your story: Thana is a mute seamstress in 80s New York, and we all know that New York in the 80s was a pretty rough place to live (at least that's the way it's portrayed in movies.). Well, on the way home from work one evening, Thana is attacked and raped, not once, but twice! This causes her to lose touch with reality slightly and harbor a deep, deep hatred of men, in fact, she begins dressing provocatively and walking the streets at night, hoping that some man, any man will approach her in an off-color way...that's where the .45 comes in. You see, Thana has gone insane, and since she's always seemed a little bit off to her co-workers, they fail to realize until too late that she's lost it.
Ms .45 is not just a revenge piece, there's more here than that. Thana's break with reality is one that you can honestly believe, after two traumatic events in one day (however coincidental that might be) anyone might have mental issues. And, as the film progresses, we see that Thana isn't just after "bad guys", she's really after any man who crosses her path, at one point hanging around a man in a bar, hoping that he'll do something, when he doesn't, she still pulls the gun on him, but he's so depressed from telling her all his woes, that he uses it on himself! Ms .45 isn't for everyone, it's very low budget and it's pretty violent, but it's a great story, with great acting and it really deserves better than to be known as just a 'female Death Wish'. I'm giving Ms. 45 four out of four cigars,

because, as they say, sisters are doing it for themselves...even when it's just getting even with the scum of the earth! So, until next time, when I'll tell you about my own break with reality, I fantasized that I ran a web site dedicated to cult and b movies, remember that the best movies are bad movies!
